Excerpt from Character
I have endeavoured, to the best of my power, to illustrate the power and efficiency of Individual Character by numerous examples taken from history, from biography, and from personal experience. It seems to me that there is no better method of impressing the minds of young people, than by citing instances of noble behaviour from the lives of the best men and women who have ever lived.
It will be found from the following pages that Character requires the exercise of many supreme qualities; such as truthfulness, chasteness, merci fulness and with these integrity, courage, virtue.

Explaining the importance of strong character beyond the moral aspects is so challenging that I can think of few authors who have even cracked the surface. Sam Smiles not only succeeds in this area, but does it so thoroughly that this may be the only book you ever need to fully grasp the subject. This book is filled with gems, examples, and lengthy studies regarding every aspect of the nature of character. If Sam Smiles has a short-coming it is his propensity to over clarify his points, often resulting in some lengthy and mildly redundant chapters. Yet even this is easily compensated with the massive volume of valuable material and insight offered by Smiles from start to finish.
It is unfortunate a book like this is not mandatory reading, as the human race as a whole would greatly benefit if it were. I can think of no better book to help explain, build, and develop quality temperament, and I have full confidence anyone willing to read this book will find the inspiration to improve the quality of their character.

Character Classic Reprint Samuel Smiles 9781330292723 Books Reviews
If you want to better your character, this book is an inspirational read to do just that! It is a very thoughtful book with many examples of men and women of history who display wonderful qualities. I highly recommend this book!
Very informative and really is useful info on how to be better mastering your thought process and being able to become more successful!!!
I came across this text looking for something more on the level that children would comprehend to supplement the Islamic texts on the subject. This is an excellent work and excellent reminder - that courses, classes, self-help, seminars, coaching, none of it will truly change anything. That change has to come from the self and the correction of one's character.
I highly recommend the text, it is not a difficult read.
Great book! Loved it!
After reading this book I have greater sense of being as if to find the highest purpose to have reason. It eloquently delves into all the topics of life and how we as people should seek a character of virtue. Excellent work.
Good
- Price
- Size
- Material quality
Bad
- Font is terrible, too large, thick, very difficult to read, gives headaches
But seeing as how the original book is $30...
This is a great book!!! Although written long ago, the information and lessons contained in it are priceless.
The author Samuel Smiles lived the prime of his life in the late 1800's. His writings are very relevant to the present day however, as some of the lessons and values outlined are timeless in nature. Great men and women throughout history have many similar characteristics. But what are they? Can they be adequately described? What advise, would some of the truly great persons of the past have for us today?
Words like Duty, Self-Control, Courage, Truthfulness, Faithfulness, and Work Ethic, are terms often used, but seldom described. In this book there are pages, not only describing those terms, but also gives many interesting examples from history of individuals who exemplify those expressions.
This book truly inspires a person to be "better" and gives a clear roadmap to just what that goal is. It has instantly become one of my favorites. I have highlighted so much of it, and any reader will no doubt want to remember many of the quotes contained.
Very inspirational and worth the time to read it!!!
